Joe Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe says Bernard Hopkins will have to “get in line” after the American issued a challenge.

“I agreed a fight with him a couple of years ago then he doubled the demands, now he must wait,” said Calzaghe.

Light heavyweight king Hopkins said after Saturday’s win over Ronald Wright that he wants to face Calzaghe at New York’s Yankee Stadium next spring.

“They talk of me not fighting in the US but not why Hopkins or Roy Jones don’t leave their backyard,” said Calzaghe.

“Why should I go to America when if we do the fight in the UK we can make far more money in front of a bigger crowd?

“Hopkins and Wright are supposed to be two of the top pound-for-pound fighters yet their fight didn’t even sell out the Mandalay Bay, it drew something like 9,000 people.

“I’m focusing on a real fight against Mikkel Kessler, but once that is done I’m willing to go to the States if that is where the best deal is.

“I will look at Ol’ Popkins, but judging by his performance against Wright there isn’t much competition there for me anyway.”

Calzaghe faces Mikkel Kessler at 168lbs in Cardiff on 3 November.

The eagerly awaited super middleweight unification bout could be in front of a world indoor record crowd of 70,000 at the Millennium Stadium.

The sign of Calzaghe’s burgeoning profile came in Hopkins’ post-fight interview live on US TV.

“I’m back, it was a great performance and I’ll fight anyone out there,” said Hopkins.

“I want Joe Calzaghe in the Yankee Stadium in the spring and I’ll knock him out, he won’t be undefeated any more.”

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya added: “If Bernard wants Calzaghe, then it’s our duty to go make that fight.”

Welshman Calzaghe, 35, is undefeated in 43 fights and is the world’s longest-reigning world champion, having made 21 defences of the WBO crown over 10 years.

But WBC and WBA champion Kessler promises to be one of his stiffest tests, the 28-year-old Dane undefeated in 39 fights.

The bout will be Calzaghe’s biggest since he took Jeff Lacy’s IBF title in March 2006, and Lacy believes that his conqueror could struggle.

“I’m going to have to lean toward Kessler,” Lacy told the Boxing Talk website.

“He’s more of a puncher, I think Calzaghe is more of a hype-type puncher.

“He needs to put his punches together, and I don’t think he’s going to be able to do that against a taller, lankier opponent like Kessler.”

Calzaghe has said that the bout will be his last at super middleweight, although that could change if big names like Wright or Jermain Taylor could be tempted into a match-up.

Grand National

THE GRAND NATIONAL

The first Grand National took place in 1839 over a somewhat different course to the one we see today. The Grand National horses were required to jump a stone wall, run across a ploughed field and then over two hurdles. The first Grand National winner was aptly named Lottery!

The Mildmay course on which the Grand National is now run was opened in 1953 at the same time as the motor racing circuit which you can see around the outside of the course. Aintree is where Stirling Moss won his first Grand Prix.

Grand National history hit its lowest point in 1975 with the smallest ever Aintree attendance. Seeing that the Grand National was in danger of being lost forever, Ladbrokes stepped in to save the race and keep the spectacle alive. I wonder if they regretted this in 2005 when heavily backed favourite Hedgehunter won The John Smiths Grand National and reportedly cost the betting industry £000’s!

Seagram injected much needed money into the Grand National through sponsorship between 1984 and 1991 when the last Seagram Grand National was fittingly won by a horse called Seagram.

Red Rum is undoubtedly the most famous of Grand National horses having won the 1973, 1974 and 1977 races as well as finishing runner up in 1975 and 1976. Red Rum remains the only horse in Grand National history to have won the race three times and after his death in 1995, at the age of 30, was buried near the winning post on the Grand National course.

In late 1979, Bob Champion, the successful jockey, was told that he had cancer and only months to live. Shortly earlier Aldaniti had almost been retired because of his leg trouble. Against all the odds, Champion and Aldaniti combined to win the 1981 Grand National. Bob Champion made a full recovery and, with the help of Aldaniti, raised £millions for cancer research. The story inspired the 1983 film Champions.

The 1956 Grand National was lost by Devon Loch after collapsing just 50 yards from the line in a thrilling finish. An experience for jockey Dick Francis which led him to writing many other thrillers!

Carl Llewellyn has the best record of current riders, having won the Grand National twice, on Party Politics in 1992 and Earth Summit in 1998.

In 1982 Geraldine Rees on Cheers became the first female jockey to complete the Grand National course.

Famous Grand National trainers Ginger McCain and Fred Rimell have both trained four winners. Red Rum was a three time winner for McCain who returned to the winners enclosure two decades later when Amberleigh House won the 2004 race.

Captain Tim Forster entered the Grand National history books when joining the Grand National trainers with three winners (Well To Do 1972, Ben Nevis 1980 and Last Suspect 1985).

Jenny Pitman was the first Lady in Grand National history to train a winner with Corbiere in 1983. Jenny then saddled the 1991 runner up Garrison Svannah before training the “winner” of the 1993 void race, Esha Ness. But in 1995 she finally won her second Grand National with Royal Athlete. Son Mark, who rode her 1991 runner up Garrison Savannah, has now taken over at the yard where he will be hoping to train many more Grand National horses.

Bulgaria v Wales

Bulgaria 0       Wales  1

Well, WHAT A RESULT!!

Who would have thought that a Welsh team minus most of the star names would beat Bulgaria.

Freddy Eastwood marked his debut with a stunning goal to give Wales a notable victory in Wednesday’s friendly with Bulgaria in Bourgas.

The Wolves striker unleashed a fierce 20-yard drive in first-half stoppage time after Bulgaria had dominated.

“It was a really special goal. Freddy knew just what he wanted to do and worked his way into a position to crack it home,” said a delighted Toshack.

“We have produced several decent performances of late, several 0-0 draws when we have had chances but missed.

“Now we have got a player up front who knows his business.”

Wales were indebted to a superb display by young goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who saved a string of long-range shots.

“He is only a boy really, but at 6ft 5in he is an imposing young man,” Toshack added. “When we were under the cosh he made some very important saves for us.

Wales had a lucky escape in the final stages when Danny Gabbidon’s sliced clearance hit the post.
