Fancy our 3 Welsh teams to win this weekend??
We are offering 13/1 for Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham to win.
A poor return this week-end for our three Football League teams where we only managed one point between all three teams. No returns for our Saturday Special this week!!!
Cardiff were out top performer getting a point in a 2-2 draw with Preston at Ninian Park where super-star Robbie Fowler opened his account with two goals. Unfortunately Preston replied with two excellent strikes from Callum Davidson.
Leeds created a club record start of seven straight wins when beating Swansea City 2-0 at Elland Road. Two second half goals from Beckford and Prutton silenced the travelling Swansea fans.
Wrexham fans must be worried by the poor start made to the season which leaves Wrexham bottom of Division 2. A 26th minute strike from Marc Williams put Wrexham ahead but Stockport replied within 3 minutes through Elding. Stockport piled on the misery in the 64th minute with a winner from Blizzard.
Lucarno overcame the challenge of Aidan O’Brien duo Mahler and Honolulu to win the St Leger at Doncaster, the world’s oldest Classic. The 7-2 second favourite overhauled Mahler late on to give trainer John Gosden and jockey Jimmy Fortune a famous win.
The three-year-old, who triumphed by a length, travelled well and once he got to the front, he looked strong.
Mahler had to be content with second, just ahead of the favourite Honolulu.
Llanelli Scarlets will host Newport Gwent Dragons the following day. The fixtures will be reversed on the following weekend as the Welsh regions start the new campaign two weeks before the Irish and Scottish sides. The first full round of fixtures will be on the weekend 21/22/23 September with only Cardiff Blues enjoying home advantage, hosting Glasgow Warriors.
The Ospreys will be in Ulster, the Dragons in Connacht and the Scarlets away against Munster.
“Successive weekends of Welsh derby matches will provide a fantastic start to the new tournament for Welsh fans and it will be a great bridge between the three August internationals and the World Cup itself,” said Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive Roger Lewis. “It will be an invaluable proving ground for the young talent coming through at regional level and will give the four coaches the ideal build-up to the Heineken Cup competition in November.” FIXTURES AUG/SEPT 2007

The Magners League gets underway when Cardiff Blues entertain the Ospreys at Cardiff Arms Park. Both teams will be without many of the star players due to World Cup call-ups…..12 from the Ospreys and 5 from Cardiff so it will be a test of the strength of both squads. Former Osprey Jason Spice is expected to make his debut for the Blues with Mark Taylor also making his debut for the Ospreys. No Gavin Henson for the Ospreys as he is still recovering from illness. One for you trivia fans….this will be the first Magners League game where a video ref. will be used.
Freddy Eastwood marked his debut with a stunning goal to give Wales a notable victory in Wednesday’s friendly with Bulgaria in Bourgas. The Wolves striker unleashed a fierce 20-yard drive in first-half stoppage time after Bulgaria had dominated.
“It was a really special goal. Freddy knew just what he wanted to do and worked his way into a position to crack it home,” said a delighted Toshack.
“We have produced several decent performances of late, several 0-0 draws when we have had chances but missed.
“Now we have got a player up front who knows his business.”
Wales were indebted to a superb display by young goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who saved a string of long-range shots.
He is only a boy really, but at 6ft 5in he is an imposing young man,” Toshack added. “When we were under the cosh he made some very important saves for us.
Wales had a lucky escape in the final stages when Danny Gabbidon’s sliced clearance hit the post.
John Toshack
Born in Cardiff, John started his career with Cardiff City before Bill Shankly moved in and paid £110,000 to take him to Liverpool. His partnership with Kevin Keegan became one of the most deadly partnerships in football. In 1978 he moved as player manager of Swansea City and then began the greatest period in the history of the club, taking them from the fourth division all the way to the first division in four successive years. He also achieved great success in his time as a manager in Spain where he is held in great esteem by the Spanish fans. He is now the manager of the Welsh national team and is reported to be ready to extend his contract beyond 2009.
Dean Saunders
Former Welsh International striker Dean is now the assistant manager of Wales. After a successful career as a player Dean has gained experience as assistant to Graeme Souness ending at Newcastle whare he was assistant manager. “I am really very proud and excited to be given this opportunity.” said Saunders who gained 75 caps for Wales and scored 22 goals.
Striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink has agreed a one-year-deal to join Cardiff City. The 35-year-old Dutchman has been without a club since being released by Charlton Athletic last season. He was on the verge of a move to Leicester City but that broke down at the weekend. That alerted the Bluebirds with chairman Peter Ridsdale keen to link up with Hasselbaink again, after working with him at Leeds United.Hasselbaink met with Ridsdale earlier in the week and agreed to join Cardiff on a one-year-deal today.Hasselbaink is the latest big signing to head to Ninian Park with former England internationals Robbie Fowler and Trevor Sinclair already at the club.An impressive 2-0 victory for ‘The Bluebirds’ at Q.P.R. with a fine performance from Paul Parry letting Welsh manager John Toshack know that he is still around!
Not an inspiring start to the new season for our Football League teams with Cardiff losing at home 0-1 to Stoke City, Swansea losing 1-2 to a last minute goal at Oldham and Wrexham losing 0-2 at Darlington.
A much better return for our Welsh teams this week with fine wins for Cardiff and Wrexham and an encouraging draw for Swansea against promotion favourites Nottingham Forest. Let’s hope this improvement continues!
———————————————————————–
A fine away win for Swansea with goals from Robinson [2] and Scotland beating Walsall 3-1.
Cardiff again disappointed the fans with a home defeat by Coventry……they must be hoping that the super star strikers soon manage to get on the pitch.
Wrexham slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Bradford despite a goal from Neil Roberts .
All 3 teams are in action in the League Cup this week with Cardiff entertaining Leyton Orient and Swansea and Wrexham facing premiership opposition in Reading and Aston Villa.
A poor night for our Welsh teams with only Cardiff eventually struggling through to the next round will a last minute winner against Leyton Orient. Swansea suffered an extra-time defeat 1-0 to premiership Reading and Wrexham being hammered 5-0 at the Racecourse by Aston Villa.
Here we go again, another new season with all the hopes and aspirations we associate with it.
All three of our league teams will be looking forward to a successful time after last season’s near-misses for Cardiff and Swansea and Wrexham’s off-field problems being finally a thing of the past.
The super-stars come and go…….Swans legend Lee Trundle off to Bristol City for £1 million and Bluebird favourite Michael Chopra [£5 million] already showing his scoring touch at Sunderland. New signings for the Swans include the new strike force of Darryl Duffy and Jason Scotland who will hopefully form a partnership to bring fear to the hearts of all Division one defenders! The Bluebirds have a new superstar in the form of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler- a striker guaranteed to get goals provided he manages to get on the pitch! Hopefully Robbie will be fit and soon become a firm favourite at Ninian Park.
Another big name signing for Cardiff with the arrival of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a class striker who should be a prolific scorer outside of the Premiership.
Wrexham will be hoping to be up there challenging for promotion now that the club’s future is secure after last season’s problems.
Let’s have a look at the men who will hopefully lead our teams to success this season.
DAVE JONES.
Born on Merseyside, Dave was a rugged defender for Everton before starting his managerial career with Stockport County, taking them to a League Cup semi-final and ultimately promotion to the old First Division. Southampton then spotted his talent making him their manager before off-field matters led to him leaving to be replaced by Glenn Hoddle. Dave then moved on to become manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers having a turbulent time until leaving in November 2004. Currently working with chairman Peter Ridsdale to bring overdue success to Cardiff City.
ROBERTO MARTINEZ
Roberto was born in Balaguer, Spain on July 13th 1973.
His career began at his home-town club before a move to Real Zaragoza where he played in La Liga. His move to Britain was due to Dave Whelan, inspirational chairman of Wigan, who signed three Spanish players in 1995. Roberto spent six seasons at Wigan making 180 appearances [+47 as sub.] scoring 23 goals.
Moving on Roberto first joined Motherwell then Walsall before his move to Swansea where he was an integral part in their dramatic escape from relegation. Leaving Swansea on a ‘free’ in 2006 he was snapped up bt Chester before the Swansea directors appointed him manager in 2007.
Roberto is also a well known TV personality appearing regularly on Sky Sports coverage of Spanish football
BRIAN CAREY.
Irishman Brian Carey was born in 1968 in Cork, a city famous for producing it’s fair share of footballers. His career began with his hometown club where he was spotted by scouts from Manchester United. Eventually Sir Alex Ferguson watched Brian in action for Cork in the Irish Cup Final against Derry. Obviously liking what he saw Brian was soon on his way to Manchester.
After a successful time at Manchester United Brian’s playing career took him to Wrexham and then on to Leicester City where he was a firm favourite for three seasons before re-joining Wrexham in July 1996.
